Spiritual Encounters - add yours

One of the rewards of telling my story has been to hear of the spiritual encounters of others. Each was so vivid at the time that I did not think to record them. I wish now that I had. The following examples are from my less than perfect memories of what I have been told. 

​Two women told of having been made aware of the death of a loved one within minutes of it happening, before they had been notified by ordinary means. For one of them, it was a matter of having been struck by a strong energy, a sense of the loved one's presence, and a message that all was well, that it was as it should be. That had been some years previous to when I talked to her and the experience had had a profound and lasting effect on her. The second woman's experience was less dramatic, but had had a similar effect. 

​One woman lost a close friend, a man she had nursed for the last year of his terminal illness. She believes he communicated with her several times in the first year or so after his death and guided her away from one potential relationship and toward another, the man she is now happily married to. She also believes that his spirit was responsible for causing her to abruptly change course while she was driving and avert an accident.

​One woman worked in a hospital and told of seeing an apparition (a man, clear enough to be recognized) appear to a seriously ill patient who was being monitored by a video camera. The apparition appeared on the tape. The experience had a lasting impact on the staff members who were aware it.

​A man told of having been brought a message by spirits when his wife was gravely injured and it was not known if she would live. She had been traveling away from home, and he was not able to go to her immediately. He spent some time in prayer and a short while later went to the door. Looking out into the night, he saw a number of owls, bringing the message that his wife would live. A short time later, he learned that she had. Owls as messengers were a part of this man's belief system, and I admit to having had some skepticism that they could appear out of nowhere. I later asked Zachary about it, and he explained that very likely spirits are involved in such cases of strong belief in a symbol. He believed they had the ability, in this case, to create the vision of the owls as they brought their message.

​I heard several accounts of having been driving on the highway and having a sudden, strong urge to slow down, even though there was no obvious reason to. A few seconds later the reason became obvious and an accident was averted. In one case, the urge was so compelling and physically felt that they had to pull over for a time. She said it was the event that started her on her spiritual journey. 

​Dream messages were mentioned by more than one person. I will describe one of my own. I mentioned in the book how I had always felt a spiritual closeness to my father and that Amelia said we had shared several lifetimes. About three weeks after his death, I had a vivid dream in which he and I were walking over the hills of my childhood home. I could sense his presence in the dream. He made a very clear statement, "I will walk with you." What led me to believe that it was his spirit, and not my own desire that I would hear from him, was the vividness of the dream and how it stayed with me, unlike most of my dreams, which tend to fade away within minutes.

​Amelia told me that dreams are often used by spirits to communicate a message. She gave me an example she was aware of: a man had been physically abusive to his son and that was what the son was focusing on after his death. The father's spirit wanted to give his son a message that he had also had good qualities and that the two of them had shared pleasant times together. His motive was selfless: he did not want his son's life to be flavored with bitterness and thoughts that his father had never loved him.
